Student nurse’s death ‘shocking’
A Mother of three is still trying to come to terms with the death of her daughter who was allegedly stabbed by her husband in Labasa yesterday morning.
Speaking from Taveuni yesterday, a distraught Salome Makita Babitu said her family had been informed of her daughter, 22-year-old Amelia Babitu’s death.
Ms Babitu said she was experiencing a hard time, and trying to accept her daughter’s — a third-year student at the Labasa Sangam School of Nursing — death.
“Amelia is 22-years-old and had a promising future because she was supposed to graduate from nursing school this year,” she said.
“It is really painful because Amelia is the eldest of my three children and mother of one.”
Ms Babitu claimed they spoke last week and the victim told her she was going through a hard time.
She said it was too early for her to say anything, adding she was still shocked at her daughter’s death.
Police spokesperson Inspector Jokatama Qio said the suspect was in police custody for the alleged murder.
Insp Qio said the alleged incident happened sometime during the early hours of yesterday because the matter was reported to the Labasa Police Station at 7am.
Director intelligence Senior Superintendent of Police Vakacegu Toduadua said the girl had allegedly died from stab wounds she received.
SSP Toduadua said they would be treating the alleged incident as a murder case.
“The body of the deceased is at the hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination,” SSP Toduadua said.
The alleged incident took place at the Vakamasisuasua industrial subdivision which was cordoned off by police yesterday when a team from this newspaper visited the area.
