Sanaya Sahib death: Mother Sofina Nikat charged with murder of Melbourne toddler found in creek
Police earlier said Sofina Nikat had told them a stranger abducted her daughter.
The mother of 14-month-old Sanaya Sahib, whose body was found in a Melbourne creek early on Sunday morning, has confessed to killing the toddler, a court has heard.
Sofina Nikat, 22, faced an out-of-sessions court hearing after being charged with one count of murder.
She was remanded in custody to face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
The homicide squad’s Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey told the court Nikat made the full admission during a police interview.
Nikat had been questioned in the presence of her lawyer after being arrested in Mont Albert on Tuesday morning, he said.
Nikat is yet to officially enter a plea.
The justice asked her if she was being looked after properly, to which she replied “yeah, yeah”.
She did not speak for the rest of the hearing.
Nikat had earlier told investigators her daughter was snatched from her pram by a stranger as they were walking in Olympic Park at Heidelberg West on Saturday morning.
Sanaya was found in Darebin Creek at Heidelberg West in the early hours of Sunday.
An emotional vigil was held for Sanaya on Monday night and her family, including her grandmother, attended a football match in which a minute’s silence was held in memory of the toddler.
Police said on Monday a post-mortem examination would be carried out on the toddler’s body, but no details of the results were released.
Victorian Police Commissioner Graham Ashton tweeted his thanks to officers “for their hard work” on the case.
