AKASHNI Lata and her three children Ravitesh Kumar, 7, Shivanshni Lata, 5, and Avitesh, 1, were waiting for their father Ratnesh Sharan to arrive home with Christmas presents.
His job as a truck driver had kept him away for more than a week and the family was eager to be reunited with their father.
However, a telephone call that Mrs Lata received at 6.30pm on Thursday literally brought her to her knees and shattered the family’s Christmas plans.
Mr Sharan was killed instantly when the truck he was driving veered off the road and hit a container at Korotogo.
“He was a very loving and caring husband and a good father to our children,” said the distraught six-month pregnant wife.
“He called me early on Thursday and said he was coming home and when I told the kids, they were so excited and now he is gone.”
Four men who were travelling with Mr Sharan when the accident happened were treated for superficial wounds and sent home.
Mr Sharan’s brother-in-law Shalvin Sharma said one of the men told him that the accident happened because the brakes had failed.
Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri urged road users to exercise restraint and to follow the road rules to ensure safe passage to their destination.
“Our sympathies go out to the Sharan family,” he said.
“At a time when family members should be getting together to celebrate, the Sharan family will be gathering to lay Mr Sharan to rest.”
