Fiji Broadcasting Company Manager of Radio Programs and newest 4FJ champion, Shammi Lochan, today announced that FBC will support the 4FJ campaign across its six radio stations, pledging to inform all its audiences on the need to give kawakawa and donu space to breed.
“On our six radio stations, we pledge to educate others not to buy, sell or eat kawakawa and donu during the peak spawning months, June through September, so that for the rest of the months we will have more of these fish,” said Lochan, who is also a popular radio and television personality in Fiji.
Lochan, has also made a personal pledge not to eat the fish at home during the spawning season and agreed to be one of the 4FJ 2015 champions. Lochan said urgent action is needed, so she hoped all her family, friends and audiences would join her in making the 4FJ pledge.
“Kawakawa and donu are an important source of income for fisherman and, in the Pacific, we largely depend on the sea for food,” Lochan said. “So what will happen when that supply begins to run out?”
FBC radio stations, are Radio Fiji One and Bula FM (i-Taukei), Radio Fiji Two and Mirchi FM (Hindustani) and Gold FM and 2Day FM (English).
With this pledge, FBC has identified a critical issue facing Fiji and is taking swift action to help the people address it. This is the highest service media can provide the public. Big vinaka vakalevu to Shammi Lochan and the FBC family for taking the lead.
