PRELIMINARY works on testing the $15million hydro on Taveuni has started.
North divisional planning officer Alipate Bolalevu said major construction works had been completed and the Fiji Electricity Authority team had now become part of the operation.
“The testing of the hydro needs to be done to ensure it operates well and good when it opens in March this year,” Mr Bolalevu said.
“We are looking at that month so from now until then, all tests will be done on the hydro as we want the people of Taveuni to enjoy another Government development project for them.
“We all know that the hydro will benefit a lot of people on the island, particularly the business community and the hoteliers.”
Mr Bolalevu said the people of Taveuni had longed for such development. He added electricity from the hydro would cover surrounding areas, about 10km from Somosomo towards the north and south ends.
“Right now, businesses on the island have their own generators and supply of electricity. But Government’s hydro project will boost development and business on the island and benefit farmers.”
The project is a joint venture between the Chinese and Fijian governments.
A separate dam has also been constructed at the site and pipelines will run from the powerhouse to the dam which is a distance of about five km.
