A pregnant woman was among five people who burned to death in a horror fire early yesterday morning in Navosai, Nasinu, between Suva and Nausori.
The dead are: Faria Ali (pregnant) and her husband Imran Ali; Jai Narayan 54; his granddaughter Prishika Devi, 10; and daughter Uleshni Irene Lata, 28.
Two men were in Police custody last night for alleged arson, said Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro.
The fire shattered the peace and quiet of this crowded settlement. It is also believed to have claimed the highest number of victims in one fire in Fiji. The recently-wed Ali couple, from Nadi, were renting one of the three corrugated iron flats destroyed. Mr Narayan owned the three flats. Tenants in the second flat escaped the fire. The Alis were found dead seeking shelter in their toilet. Mr Narayan and Prishika died in the middle flat which they occupied. Uleshni died at CWM Hospital.
The National Fire Authority’s chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said the three flats attached to each other were fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.
“The fire had also threatened to spread to the nearby houses which were very close to the house on fire, but the firefighters managed to stop the fire from spreading,” he said.
