Commission has uncovered a million dollar scam involving a land developer – M. Naidu Development.
The owner of the company Mukesh Naidu was given a 5 year development lease in Sakoca, a settlement in Tamavua, to develop land and provide it to people upon consultations with the i-Taueki Lands Trust Board.
However as our reports, more than 2000 people are still waiting for their parcels of land after paying thousands of dollars.
He is the man who has disappeared in thin air after taking thousands of dollars from the people of a small community Sakoca in exchange of developing their land.
Mukesh Naidu is now on the wanted list of not only the Fiji Police Force but more than 2500 people of this settlement.
Naidu was given a 5 year lease to develop the land for people here.
“Once the development phase was completed, he was to take consent from the TLTB to sell the land to public. As soon as he got the development lease, he advertised for the sale of this land, took money from public promising that they will be given a piece of land,” said Bobby Maharaj, CEO, Fiji Commerce Commission.
144 complaints against Naidu was filed with the Commerce Commission.
Commission estimates this to be a scam of close to a million dollars.
Having lost thousands of dollars from each household, these residents are just being optimistic.
“Now people are in a limbo. Most of these people are poor, mostly from North and West who are displaced farmers due to land issues, they came and settled here,” said Indar Deo Bisun, Chairman- Sakoca Land Issues.
“Some of these residents have paid as much as 18 thousand dollars to the developer. Some parcels of lands have not been sold once, twice or even thrice,” said Halitesh Datt, Sakoca.
“We also discovered that there were a couple of cases whereby the documents were forged, without TLTB’s consent, M. Naidu was giving the letter for the customers to occupy the piece of land and now a number of houses have been constructed there and they are living in,” said Bobby Maharaj, CEO, Fiji Commerce Commission.
The Commission has taken the matter to the court.
“Infact if you look at the conduct of developer, he generally has not been cooperating with the matter and currently there is a bench warrant that has been issues under his name. We are trying to get him to appear before court,” he said.
Police are requesting for any information that can lead to the arrest of Naidu
