“When the officers started to inspect the contents of the luggage, they found two bottles of cow urine for medicinal purposes,” confirmed Antony Owen, Manager for Border Clearance with the Ministry for Primary Industries.
In India, while some consider cow urine, or Gomutra, laden with therapeutic properties, others still have their doubts. In Aryurvedic branch of medicine, cow urine is considered medically beneficent for the consumer.
Owen further added, “We probably get things like this because they are related to culture, religion or traditional medicines. When they fall into that category that can cloud people’s judgement sometimes in what they’re declaring.”
According to Owen, because people believe animal products to be medically healing, it often becomes an ambiguous situation wherein they don’t know whether to declare such items while travelling.
