“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.”
You may be the CEO of some company or may have a hot shot designation in a reputed firm; you may have people worshipping the ground on which you walk on, but all of that comes down the flames if you treat your inferiors inhumanly or maintain a snobbish attitude towards them.
The person bearing testimony to this is the Indian-American CEO of an IT firm, Himanshu Bhatia. Her domestic help, Sheela Ningwal, had come all the way from India to help her and the duo lived together.
However, Himanshu paid no heed to her reason. Instead, she paid her $400 (Rs. 26540) monthly for working 15 hours a day and seven days a week.
Sheela was given the responsibility to clean all the homes – San Juan Capistrano and other luxury residences in Miami, Las Vegas and Long Beach, California.
In return for this service, Sheela was made to sleep on the carpet with Himanshu’s dogs when she was ill and forced to leave without food.
Her passport was also confiscated so that she couldn’t run away.
Sheela was determined to leave the home and one day he googled the term “labour laws”. Himanshu witnessed this incident and got scared.
She asked Sheela to sign a document which stated that she was subjected to a fair treatment.
US Labor Secretary, Thomas E Perez filed a complaint on August 22 in the US District Court for the Central District of California and it was found that Sheela was subjected to a callous treatment.
This makes me really sad.
How can a person heading the company with a huge turnover behave in such a way? Aren’t these people supposed to have “good demeanour”?
People like Himanshu still thrive in many sections of the society and there are many people like Sheela who sacrifice a lot and get no morsel of humanity in return.
