Former Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald confirms that there was outside interference in the operations of the Fiji Police Force.
In an interview with Fiji One news, Groenewald alleges obstruction while working as the Police Commissioner of the Fiji Police Force.
Citing the high profile Iowane Benedito case as one such example.
“DPP has decided to charge 3 police officers and 2 military people we had numerous problems in
getting one of the suspects behind bars because they were harboring him, and they didn’t want to
release him.To me that was straightforward preventing the course of justice and I was not satisfied and could not get satisfaction from any of the officers”
Groenewald though declining to clarify further said there were also other reasons for his resignation.
“There were other reasons also , I am packing and I will be leaving as soon as
He said prior to leaving he will ensure that a hand over is done to the newly appointed Acting Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho.
Qiliho has also confirmed that he will be making an official statement on Monday.
“I need to hand over, I will do that.I will be waiting for the new incumbent to give me a call when he is ready so I can hand over”.
A Government statement released yesterday stated in part that Groenewald had asked for an early release from his contractual appointment as the Commissioner of the Fiji Police Force due to personal and family reasons.
