At least five families are homeless after a fire in Howell Road Suva destroyed 2 properties – one of which had 4 flats.
The wood and corrugated iron houses were destroyed late yesterday afternoon despite efforts by firefighters from Suva, Nasinu and Nausori.
Sandeep Shandil Roy, whose home was destroyed, claims firefighters were slow to respond.
National Fire Authority Chief Executive John O’Connor was at the scene last night, he says the only fire hydrant in the area was low on water pressure.
“In order to get water we had to get back to Rewa Street to fill, but traffic was really tight and our trucks couldn’t move. That really impacted initial fire fighting when our trucks started running out.”
O’Connor says given the magnitude of the fire, they had to concentrate their resources on ensuring that nearby home didn’t catch fire as well.
The usually quiet neighbourhood in Howell Road was a chaotic scene last night as firetrucks continuously drove to and fro the nearest fire hydrant to re-fill their tanks.
The NFA is yet to determine the cause of the fire.
