Fijians celebrate win
THOUSANDS of rugby fans turned up at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva yesterday to celebrate a milestone achievement by the Vodafone Fiji 7s team who returned from the London 7s as HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series champions.
The back to back feat caused many to gather and join the throng in honour of the team and the sacrifices each player has committed throughout the 2015-2016 season. Team captain Osea Kolinisau took to the stage to address the fans thanking them for their support and requested that their fervent prayers continue until the Rio Olympics.
“In the last series and this series and we couldn’t have done it without the help of these supporters. We know that every time we play that you have us in your thoughts and prayers and now that we are done with the series, we look forward to our major goal as a country and as a nation. We are trying to go and get Fiji’s first gold medal in Rio and we cannot do that alone as players. I know that we can do that together as a nation as a country and we need God to direct our team,” he said.
Kolinisau spoke passionately about the team’s loss to England in the pool stages of the London 7s that had left the team’s chances of winning the title in limbo.
“Sometimes Ben tells us we are on a cliff and we are about to get pushed back and I know last week when we lost to England, thoughts and memories of a team, Serevi’s team that lost in France they didn’t make the quarter-finals. It kept creeping into our minds. I thank the boys for helping each other up when we lost that game to England and we told each other that we needed to fight back and we needed to take a step back so we don’t fall off the cliff and that the hard work we did throughout the series would count for nothing,” he said.
By winning the series, the Vodafone Fiji 7s team are top seeds at the Rio Olympics.
