Children Saved From House Blaze
It was a sad Christmas for four children who were rescued by neighbours from a house fire in Waiyavi, Lautoka, last Friday.
According to neighbour, Lanieta Radroro, they were having a small gathering when they heard of the fire.
“Around half nine we were having one small family gathering here and then one of the teenagers started shouting fire from one of the air conditioned rooms.
“We ran that side, my husband climbed over the fence to help the children out of the house,” she said.
Ms Radrordro said that the four children, two were teenagers, a primary school student and an infant, were with their nanny when the incident occurred.
She said the parents were in Suva.
“The firefighters arrived 10 minutes later, but by then most of the house got burnt.”
She added that one of the children told her that smoke was coming out of the ceiling before the fire started.
Attempts to contact the children’s family were unsuccessful.
The National Fire Authority said the fire occurred around 9:45pm and they arrived at the scene at 9:55pm to find the house fully engulfed in flames.
Two fire trucks were used to put the fire out and also to save neighbouring houses a few metres away.
