Bilibili Race In Wainikoro Today
For the first time a bilibili (bamboo raft) race takes place at the Wainikoro River outside Labasa today.
The event is organised by the Nadogo Bilibili Association.
Association member and organising committee chairperson Mohammed Khan said the Wainikoro River is behind the Nadogo Central College ground.
“We are expecting 30 teams from 34 villages and settlements and anyone can enter since it’s free-of-charge,” he said.
“The newly formed association will provide the bamboo rafts to the participants. We thought of this provision after considering the locality and we don’t want anyone to spend money.”
Khan said competition would be held in different categories and one would be for those over the age of 45.
“Prizes will be given to best dressed teams and best cheering groups.”
He said the association has their constitution and is registered with the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
“The aim is to revive various cultures and empower our youths. The races have been sponsored by Remington Fiji Limited. The trophies and medals have been donated by a retired primary school teacher Habibi Khan and his family. Cash prizes will be given to the winning teams.”
Khan said the river is safe for competition and they would be having their medical team working closely with the Police officers and the team from Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF).
“We are also welcoming individuals and business organisations to sell their produce or showcase them. There will be no fees charged.”.
