Baby with no mum!!
ONE-MONTH-OLD Charles John spent his first Christmas holiday without his mother, Jasmin Rao, who died earlier this month at Suva’s Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
John Rao, father of 22-year-old Jasmin, said he was saddened that his first grandchild would grow up without a mother.
“After carrying her baby for nine months, my daughter had labour pains on November 17 and because she could not have a normal delivery, a Cesarean section (C-section) was done the next day and doctors told us later that she got very sick just before the operation from a condition where her water broke and the baby’s cells went into Jasmin’s blood,” Mr Rao claims.
“My daughter did not wake up after the operation and for the next 24 days she was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward at CWM before she died on December 8.
“During a meeting we had with the doctor, we were told Jasmin did not have pregnancy diabetes and when we told him that she did have it, the doctor then said he did not read the full file and so didn’t know of that condition,” he claims.
Mr Rao claimed the family was told by doctors on November 29 that Jasmin’s brain was severely damaged and that only the brain centre that controlled her breathing was working.
“On December 8 they called us at 1.30am to say my daughter had died. We want the doctors to tell us exactly what happened.”
He added that Jasmin had looked forward to becoming a wife and mother to her new family.
“She was always happy, was very fashionable and she looked forward to baptising her son when he grew older,” Mr Rao said.
“We will all miss her.”
Health and Medical Services Minister Rosy Akbar said she would consult CWM Hospital staff and management before making any comment.
