Fiji’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, has decided to charge 17 people from the province of Ra including three chiefs for sedition and inciting communal antagonism. The group will be charged under section 65 (2) (a) under 67 (1) (a) of the Crimes Decree 2009.
The decision to charge follows an investigation by Police into certain activities by a group of individuals in the Ra district last year. The seventeen people charged are Ratu Epeli Niudamu, Sailasa Wairoaroa Malani, Sereima Adidave Rokodi, Nanise Kasami Nagusuca, Waisea Duailima, Isikeli Waisega Kabakoro, Laisiasa Mocevakaca, Emosi Toga, Waisake Racaca, Samuela Ligabalavu, Mikaele Gonerara, Seini Raiko, Josefa Natau, Sulueti Lotu Waqalala, Ulaiyasi RabuaTuivomo, Apolosi Qalilawa and Ilisapeci Natau.
Mr Pryde said in addition to charges being brought against the named individuals, further charges may be brought against other people who allegedly masterminded this operation, including people that may have since left the country.
