Garment Worker Gets Nine Years For ‘Party’ Rape
A 23-year-old garment factory worker who was convicted of raping a fellow colleague at Kanace Place in Valelevu, Nasinu in 2013 has been sentenced to nine-and-a-half years imprisonment.
Matai Sukanavanua who was initially charged with one count of rape appeared before Justice Salesi Temo at the High Court in Suva last Friday.
The court heard the incident happened on December 20, 2013 when the accused was then 20-years-old and the victim, 29 years old.
The court was informed that the employer of the accused and the victim had organised a Christmas and New Year’s party where consumption of alcohol was also involved.
Sukanavanua and the victim had consumed alcohol which also led to the victim blacking out before being raped by Sukanavanua.
While delivering Sukanavanua’s sentence, Justice Temo said the accused had breached the trust the victim had on him as a friend which was why she consented on consuming alcohol with him.
Justice Temo also told the accused that by offending against the complainant, he had shown utter disregard to her right as a human being, her right not to be harmed and her right to a peaceful and quality life.
Sukanavanua will be eligible for parole after seven years.
