Estimated 473 Fijians are overstaying in New Zealand
This is according to a recent estimate from Immigration New Zealand on Over stayers, for the period July 2000 to January 2016.
However, the number of Fijians overstaying in the country have considerably dropped from more than a thousand in 2010 to 771 in 2013.
The New Zealand government also allows for individuals who are overstaying to choose voluntary departure.
A total of 565 Fijians chose voluntary departure over being deported between 2006 and 2010.
As the number of over stayers have reduced the removal and deportation costs have more than halved.
The costs incurred in 2014 and 2015 were $1.3 million compared to $3 million in 2005 and 2006.
Meanwhile according to Immigration New Zealand if a person is deported they face a ban of five years before they can apply to return to the country.
