4 Year-Old’s Death Shocks Family
A family is still coming to terms with the loss of their four-year-old son who is the latest drowning victim.
Kaliova Ratu drowned in a newly-dug septic tank near his home in Rabulu Village, Tavua on Thursday at around 6pm.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident.
“A four-year-old child is believed to be the country’s latest drowning victim, “she said.
“This is after his body was recovered from a newly dug septic tank filled with water in Rabulu Village.”
Ms Naisoro said a post mortem would be conducted to ascertain the cause of death as investigations continue.
Vasilina Koro, the victim’s grandmother, said her family was still coming to terms with the loss.
“He was rainbathing outside so he asked his mother if he could come to my house which was a short distance from where they live,” she said.
“15 minutes later his mother came looking for him but I told her that I had not seen him and from there the search for him began.”
Mrs Koro said the whole village searched for him from 6pm to7.30pm. They searched near a flooded river bank close to the village.
“We looked in the septic tank but couldn’t see anything however when we used a pole to feel around the dark tank his shirt was caught up so we pulled his body out,” she said.
“His death comes as a shock to us because Kaliova was a kind hearted child, hardworking and cared for his younger siblings,” she said.
“His father at this moment is still in shock and cannot believe that his oldest son is gone.”
Meanwhile, village head man Tevita Nailati encouraged parents to keep a watchful eye on their children at all times.
“This is the first incident to happen in this village,” he said.
“Parents play a vital role in the supervision of their children, and taking up that responsibility will ensure that incidents such as this do not happen again.”
